How To Choose Hardwood Floors

Tips On Selecting Your Wood Floors.

Choosing the perfect hardwood flooring for your home is very exciting. However, most people don’t know what to ask when buying hardwood floors. We want to use our experience to help you, so we are going to give you a simple guide for when you are considering what hardwood floor is best for your home.

HARDWOOD FLOORS FACTORS TO CONSIDER

1. Solid or Engineered

First, you need to think if you want engineered floors or solid hardwood floors in your home. Both options have their pros and cons. But, there are some questions that can help you decided. For example, you must ask yourself where the hardwood will be placed. Certain areas such as basements have only one option to select from: engineered. You want to make sure this is considered first.

2. Species

The second aspect you need to think about is the species of wood. There are differences in the species of wood such as grain patterns, hardness, durability, color, and style. Oak, maple, and hickory are popular choices that all contain many features homeowners enjoy. Compare sample boards side by side so you can zero in on the details they offer.

3. Color

Number 3 is color. You need to decide what type of colors you believe will match your home décor the best. This is a subjective matter, meaning that it depends on your personal taste and preferences, but many homeowners love lighter, neutral colors because they have a tendency to blend well with just about anything.

4. Width of Boards

The width of the wood flooring is something very important. If you are going for the illusion of having more space, then, you’ll want to consider a flooring option that features wider board widths5. Warranty

Next, the warranty. Hardwood floors are an investment into your home. As a consumer, you want to know your investment is protected. That’s where the warranty comes in. Make sure the hardwood floors you are interested in come with a great warranty to keep you covered for several years.

Selecting new hardwood floors is very exciting, so don’t let it be an intimidating task. The best part is being able to show off the choice you made to family and friends! Just make sure you have asked all the right questions to ensure you’ve made the best decision.

Can I Install Hardwood Floors Myself?

Installing hardwood floors is not an easy task. The process is complicated because it requires a high level of details. And certain conditions and climates can add an extra layer of difficulty.

WHY NOT TO INSTALL HARDWOOD FLOORS YOURSELF

The raw materials are not as easy to replace in case you make a mistake.

Unlike painting a wall, or replacing your kitchen cabinets, the raw materials of hardwood floors are expensive. This means that if you decide to take the task upon yourself and make a mistake requiring you to use another board, you’ll be making costly mistakes.

Special tools are required.

You’re going to need many power and hand tools for a successful installation of hardwood floors. For example, Saws of all types (i.e. Circular, Table, Jig, Miter,) for getting the right dimensions of boards and planks; floor leveling tools, nail guns, staplers, sanders, buffers, etc. In reality, you won’t be saving much money in the long run if you decide to install hardwood floors yourself, but lack all of the necessary tools.

Extra working knowledge is required.

If you’re working without having any prior knowledge of either hardwood floors or installation projects in general, then the likelihood of making a costly mistake along the way will be very high. We don’t recommend this be a project you decide to challenge yourself on, unless you truly know what you are doing.

You’ll need to know information such as how to center rooms, how much space should be left for gaps, how to work around closets, fireplaces, staircases, etc.

The safest bet is to hire a flooring professional

Hire a professional hardwood flooring company to do the job.  You’ll be certain to have the job done well and correctly from the start. If any mistakes happen, it’s on the professional to correct them on their own dime. Also, you will be saving time and money.
